BENTONVILLE, AR   Midnight Gallery presents the year my heart turned to water, a solo

exhibition that unveils a whole new body of work from multidisciplinary artist Amber Imrie.

Born in the Ozarks and shaped by its rugged, water-carved landscape, Imrie draws from both

personal and geological histories to explore queer experience, regional identity, and quiet

transformation.

“This work is a devotion to the whisper of water, and a turning toward the land

that continues to hold me.” - Amber Imrie

the year my heart turned to water is not a demand for queer visibility, rather than a nod to its

integrated existence and presence in the South. Imrie meditates on erosion as a generative

sculpting force, drawing parallels between the way water carves and endures to queerness itself.

This body of work represents resistance to erasure; it is an ode to the lived experiences of queer

people in rural landscapes.

At the heart of the exhibition lies a deep engagement with the Ozarks, a region often

misunderstood or oversimplified. Imrie proposes a new reading of the Ozarks as a site of

resilience, longing, and reclamation—where desire, tradition, and landscape sediment into one

another.
